HISTORY: SHANGRI-LA ESTATE:

Shangri La’s history started with a woman named Doris Duke. Doris Duke was a woman who inherited her wealth through her father James Buchanan Duke. After her inheritance, Doris Duke met and married her husband.  After their wedding, one of their stops for their honeymoon was Hawaii. Doris and her husband fell so in love with the area that they decided to stay longer and then eventually bought a plot of land, which is now known as Shangri La. Today, Shangri La is filled with Islamic art, that was collected by Doris Duke through her many travels around the world.  Construction of the building of Shangri La commenced in April 1936, where she was able to build her home inspired by Islamic art.  After the death of Doris Duke, the “Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art” was started in her name to help preserve many Islamic artifacts.

FYI/TIPS:

1. Bring your own pen.
2. Go when the tide is low or don't be afraid to get your legs a little wet.
(check out http://www.surfnewsnetwork.com/ for the tide charts for the day in Honolulu Harbor)
3. Wear reef walkers (recommended).
4. You can either walk across the water (sandy) or walk on the rock wall but be careful (slippery).
5. After finding the final stage... you'll find a small harbor to take a dip. Bring swim clothes, don't be afraid to jump in.
