Geocache Description:

Most probably you come here if you have written a fantastic research proposal to use leading world-class X-rays. You may want to have a look over the SPring-8 synchrotron radiation facility by climbing this hill. Access by bus, walk-in or bicycle. Please bring your camera!

To your feet lies the storage ring of a world-class synchrotron radiation facility. With 8 GeV electron energy, it tops all others of its kind. When such electron beams are bent or wiggled on zig-zag lines in magnetic fields, they irradiate X-rays with the power higher than a welding machine. Ans this at ~40 end-stations. Thousands of research projects are undertaken on numerous beamlines and end-stations, by researchers coming from Japan and all over the world. The topics cover materials science, geology, solid-state physics, environmental research, biology, medicine, engineering, and much more exotic disciplines. Researchers either write competitive research proposals, which are internationally reviewed for excellence, or pay for industrial access. Some ground-breaking results have been elaborated here - in the sense of the word, relating to inner earth physics and earthquakes.
