New Warning: 3/5/21: I visited the site today and found that the cement shelter has been modified and someone has been living in it. This is on State Park land. I dont want to disable the cache, but it is a bit creepy. Please proceed with caution.
Many of the current hiking trails in the gorge are actually former roads and rail lines built by the early pioneers. These folk eked out a living by logging the steep forests and fishing the river. They lived close to where they worked, but these communities often collapsed after the natural resources were depleted. Within the Columbia Gorge Scenic area, we can find some evidence of these former town sites and workplaces of bygone days. Mother nature is retaking her hold and the evidence of human habitation will soon be erased.
The first jalopy tour will take you to 3 different old cars found in the basin between Chanticleer and Crown Points. The final jalopy is located at an old home site with some very interesting relics.
Start at Chanticleer Point and go through the gate heading down the old road. You will be passing at least three jalopies on the tour. The tags have gone missing, so I have provided waypoints for each car and the final.
