Geocache Description:

Expect to be educated in the study of Botany and Acanthochronology (the study of cactus spine growth formation).

This cache is placed along the Trilogy Wetlands Trail. Please park at the listed coordinates.

This last Christmas, my wife and I spent the holiday in Tucson, AZ. This “bone” comes from the skeletal structure of the feared and highly revered Cholla cactus. The graveyard that is the Arizona desert is comprised of all kinds of cactus clutter, including the item before you.

Cholla are known for their barbed spines that aggressively attach to skin, fur, and clothing. Perhaps better known for its nickname, “jumping cactus”, the barbs will detach once the skin brushes up against an appendage. Closeup images of a Cholla spine show microscopic barbs which make removal extremely painful. Anyone unfortunate enough to undergo this will know the truth behind it.

As you hold the bone in your hand, consider the following.

1) Notice it's durable structure.
2) Notice now light it is. Try doing a couple curls.
3) Bang it against your head (no joke). Yeah! That would hurt! It’s no wonder that it can support the weight of these desert delights.
