Abandoned now, was the main mosque until late 1912, for all area of Gera's villages and the many and reach Muslim inhabitants.
The mosque has two minarets one on the left side and one on the right. The left one, had a lot of static issues due to the age and earthquakes and had many restoration tries that fail at the end.
The local myth connects this works with a fail of engineers to build the second one.
The story is, that the workers every day tried to finish the minaret but at night he was falling down. Many times. So the rumors started about a Christian saint, who was denying to let them built it.
To let them finish they had to make an offer to this saint, so they replaced the star with a cross shaped emblem at the top of it, where normally star & crescent will be.
This still stays on top of the second, well standing right minaret.
When in place, ask for the bakery shop with Theofilos paintings. It is at 30 meters NEE. You have to admit that the way he painted the bread standing in the wood oven is at least strange...
