Geocache Description:

One of a series of simple, easy to find, caches at railway stations in and around the Manawatu.

Welcome aboard the MCC's tramway branch service to Pennys! Start of the line! Next stop Pennys, end of the line.

Extending the tramway service from Campbelltown to Sanson had two objectives. The main one of course, was to connect to the larger town and the greater revenues it offered. But for the Manawatu County Council there was another objective - to connect to the gravel pit here to provide roading metal. Many of the roads in the district were still simple tracks and muddy in winter.

Accordingly, this pit was purchased from W. Scarrow early in 1885 and connection was made about October that year. As can be seen from the size of the resultant ponds, the pits were not worked significantly, and it is unknown when this pit was closed and the Manawatu County Council resorted to the much larger Terrace End pit to supply metal for the local roads. There must have been considerable relief when the resources of the Rangitikei River were opened up with the Pukenui connection in 1902.

For the rest of the Sanson tramway series I knew exactly where the station was and was able to place the cache very close if not actually on it. However here I could not find any information as to just where the terminus was. So I have picked a place between the two pits (ponds) as a representative location. Watch for the electric fence!
