A drive by, You can "grab" even if the park is closed
On Saturday 17 July 1911, a new park was opened in memory of Sir Alfred Hickman. The day was unfortunately marred by thunderstorms.
Sir Alfred Hickman
To commemorate the coronation of King George V, it was the chairman of the Biston Coronation Committee, W.S. Bradley who handed over the keys to the gates in Broad Street for Lady Hickman to open the park.
Sir Alfred Hickman had promoted the creating of open spaces in Wolverhampton to aid the welfare of local people. The value of the town of Bilston would be enhanced as it provided for the welfare of its inhabitants.
Design
The twelve acre sight was designed by town surveyor Mr. Vincent Turner. As well as open spaces and tree lined avenues, the public could enjoy the flower beds, a playground and a pool with a spray fountain. There was also a cast-iron drinking fountain and a bandstand which was donated by Lady Hickman.
A Place for Recreation and Leisure
In the 1920s tennis was very popular and tennis courts were added to the park.
In the 1960s an open air theatre was built, continuing the park's tradition of enhancing life for the local people.
In more recent times, the park has hosted 'Bilston by the Sea'. This is an event where a ton of sand is placed in the park for youngsters to enjoy with buckets and spades and paddling pools. The park is also popular for its annual fireworks display.
