Geocache Description:

This is part of a major series of themed geocaches, commemorating the finest heavy metal band in existence. Eagle eyed folk will note each cache contains a clue to a mystery cache which will reveal itself later in the series. Stealth required as a highly public area on a busy road.

You are looking for a small eclipse container. BYOP. Major Stealth, & please leave under rock away from muggles, don't ransack the vegetation!

While looking for a locale for this cache I discovered the presence of a tree which I had never heard of called the Hairy Maiden. There is one such specimen here, -you don't need to leave the path, the tree itself is on private land but very obvious. You can learn about the Hairy Maiden here, and as members of Iron Maiden are also 'hairy' then this fits the bill perfectly for this cache

Maidenhair

The largest Hairy Maiden in Christchurch.

The largest Hairy Maiden in Christchurch.

Check out the giant Maidenhair tree (Ginkgo biloba) at 167 Wairakei Road, which used to be owned by the Church Missionary Society. This is the largest of its kind in Christchurch and its lineage dates back 150 million years to the late Mesozoic period.

All Ginkgo are considered to be living fossils. These trees have been cultivated for centuries in the temple gardens of China and Japan and are now widely used as ornamental trees in most temperate regions of the world.

The Ginkgo tree is a good tree for planting in polluted city atmospheres where it has proved particularly tolerant. The fruit (actually a seed) of the female Ginkgo has a horrible smell when ripe, but some people consider the kernel of the nut a delicacy. Ginkgo trees are deciduous, their leaves turning bright yellow before falling in autumn.

Iron Maiden, also hairy, are an English heavy metal band formed in Leyton, east London in 1975 by bassist and primary songwriter Steve Harris. The band's discography has grown to thirty-seven albums, including fifteen studio albums, eleven live albums, four EPs, and seven compilations.

Considered one of the most successful heavy metal bands in history, Iron Maiden have sold over 85 million records worldwide with little radio or television support. The band won the Ivor Novello Award for international achievement in 2002, and were also inducted into the Hollywood RockWalk in Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles, California during their United States tour in 2005. As of October 2013, the band have played over 2000 live shows throughout their career. For the past 35 years, the band have been supported by their famous mascot, "Eddie", who has appeared on almost all of their album and single covers, as well as in their live shows.
