A bridge in the Scottish Borders, Ashiestiel Bridge (also known as Low Peel Bridge) carries a minor road over the River Tweed a mile (1.7 km) southwest of Clovenfords and 3 miles (5 km) west southwest of Galashiels. The work of John and Thomas Smith of Darnick, in 1847, this rubble-built structure was their second attempt, the first having collapsed but was immediately rebuilt. Ashiestiel Bridge is remarkable because, when it was built, it represented the longest arch-bridge in the world. Its span is 40m (131 feet). The bridge was repaired and strengthened in 1952 and again in the 1980s.
