Geocache Description:

Here you find the most advanced X-ray beams of the world! To get here, please take the SPring-8 bus to SACLA and walk out around the 1km beamline. Alternatively, you may come by bicycle or walk in. Please bring your pen!

The nearby building hosts the experimental station of the world longest X-ray beamline, with 1km length, sourcing at the SPring-8 storage ring. It has served to develop coherent X-rays, which are now produced at the SACLA X-Ray Free-Electron Laser. A low-emittance linear accelerator is installed in the first half of the 800m long building, and X-FEL undulators in the second. Experimental stations are near the storage ring with possibility to use both beams simultaneously. The X-ray pulses are so short that they allow to follow motions of atoms and electronic bonds. Also the immense strength of X-rays can strip all K-shell electrons from atoms, producing materials under extreme conditions, as they may exist in exotic places of the universe. Scientists from all over the world write research proposals to to gather for a few shifts of beam time. Most of the experimental results are published in highest-level scientific journals.
