What to see Ancient woods, continuously wooded for at least 400 years, have usually remained relatively undisturbed. They have had time to develop complex ecosystems and are home to a wide variety of trees, plants and animals, including some which are rare or threatened. You don't have to be an expert to recognise some of the most colourful and characteristic species that are to be found in Northern Ireland's ancient woods. Because of the lack of disturbance, these woods are also interesting reservoirs of historical and archaeological information. Parkland areas in particular are a good place to see ancient and veteran trees, though these also occur in woodland. Long-established woods may not always be as interesting ecologically as ancient semi-natural woods, since they do not have the same history of continuous woodland cover. Many long-established woods are plantations, created as part of the landscaping of estates. They are often historically interesting in their own right, for example, the woods at Tollymore, Co Down, where a walk through the woods reveals bridges, follies, and other remnants of the former estate. Often, they contain exotic trees, some of them now grown to a great age and size.
