TURBIDITE:
A vertical sequence of sediments that are laid down by turbidity current. The largest particles of the current settle first, which causes the coarsest grain sizes to be found at the bottom with finer grain sizes going upwards.
Turbidite is sedimentary sandstone. It is formed by compaction and cementation. Compaction occurs when pressure is brought to bear from large amounts of material placed on top of other material. Cementation occurs when pockets are filled in, usually by a cementing substance such as, calcium carbonate, silica, iron or aluminum oxide.
THIS EXAMPLE:
The example we are studying here is found along Del Puerto Canyon Road. Wander around near the cache coordinates until you find the area with the thinnest layers. These layers should be found perhaps 18 inches or so above the place you are walking. Give particular attention to the thickness of the layers and their color.
To log this cache email me answers to the following questions about these thinnest layers. Do not put any answers in your log.
- What is your estimate of the thickness of the thinnest layer you see?
- What colors do you see in these layers?
- Is there any running water or evidence of past running water in this area?
- How would you say that these layers were formed?
