Geocache Description:

This is a short series of four caches along the River Don in Beeley Woods.  If you want a longer walk, there are other caches along the path into and around Oughtibridge.

IT CAME UPON A MIDNIGHT CLEAR

This popular Christmas carol was originally written as a poem by Edmund Sears, an American pastor, in 1849, the year of the Californian Gold Rush.  Traditionally, it has five verses and is sung to the tune “Noel”, which was adapted from a traditional English folk tune by Arthur Sullivan (of Gilbert & Sullivan) in 1874.

It came upon a midnight clear,
That glorious song of old,
From angels bending near the earth,
To touch their harps of gold:
“Peace on the earth, goodwill to men,
From heaven’s all-gracious King.”
The world in solemn stillness lay,
To hear the angels sing.

The words of the fourth verse are poignant, as, not many years later, the American Civil War started.  But they are as relevant now as then.

But with the woes of sin and strife
The world has suffered long;
Beneath the angel strain has rolled
Two thousand years of wrong;
And man, at war with man, hears not
The love song which they bring:
O hush the noise ye men of strife,
And hear the angels sing.

 ..... so hush and take time to listen to the angels’ song.

Parking is suggested at the end of Claywheels Lane where a metalled path starts, which is wheelchair, buggy and cycle friendly.  However you will have to leave the path to find the caches.

If coming by public transport, get off the Supertram shuttle bus at Stockarth Lane and cross the road.   Walk towards Oughtibridge and as the houses finish, take the steps down to the river.
