Geocache Description:

This is a short series of four caches along the River Don in Beeley Woods. If you want a longer walk, there are other caches along the path into and around Oughtibridge.

ANGELS FROM THE REALMS OF GLORY

Angels, from the realms of glory,
Wing your flight o'er all the earth;
Ye who sang creation's story,
Now proclaim Messiah's birth:
Come and worship, come and worship
Worship Christ, the newborn King.

(Sung to the tune “Iris”)

Angels from the Realms of Glory was written in 1816 by the Scottish poet, James Montgomery (1771-1854), who lived in Sheffield for more than sixty years from 1792. The story is told that James Montgomery believed he had seen an angel whilst out walking and as a consequence wrote the five verses of “Angels from the Realms of Glory”. (visit link)

Shortly after coming to Sheffield, he became editor of the Sheffield Register, which he renamed the Sheffield Iris. His early poems often brought him into conflict with Government and he was twice imprisoned at York for sedition. In later life, he was a prominent figure in the Sunday School movement. He wrote over four hundred hymns, many of which are still sung today. From 1835 until he died in 1854 he lived at The Mount on Glossop Road, Sheffield. His monument stands outside Sheffield Cathedral. The Montgomery Theatre and several roads are named after him.

There is parking at the end of Claywheels Lane where a metalled path starts, which is wheelchair, buggy and cycle friendly. However you will have to leave the path to find the caches.

If coming by public transport, get off the Supertram shuttle bus at Stockarth Lane and cross the road. Walk towards Oughtibridge and as the houses finish, take the steps down to the river.
