This place has always cried out for a cache especially as I worked on the aircraft that you can see across the fence. You are looking for a nano so initials only on the log please, lots of muggles and traffic around so be stealthy. There is no need to cross the fence or the ditch or interfere with the propeller display and please do be careful of fast moving traffic if you have young children and pets with you.
The shiney jet that you can see across the fence is an English Electric Lightning Mk F1A it was Britain's first operational Mach 2 fighter developed by the English Electric (later BAC) company.
A powerful and impressive aircraft that was restricted by limited endurance and armament, it went into service as an "interim solution" in the early 1960s, only to finally be retired from first-line roles in 1988.
This aircraft was the 24th production F1A Lightning and flew first with 111 Squadron and then 226 OCU after 111 Sqn upgraded to F.3 Lightnings, it remained in second-line duties with 226 OCU, 145 Squadron and then Binbrook and finally with RAF Wattisham Target Facilities Flight (TFF), which is were I am pleased to say that I first came across it having having worked on TFF from 1970 until its, and XM192's demise in 1973, it was then put into short term storage before being put on display at the the gate of RAF Wattisham, it remained there for many years before being acquired by Charles Ross of Binbrook. Unfortunately the wings and tail were cut off for transport, but a good job was made of patching her back together for her time at Hemswell. Sadly the museum there folded in 2005; XM192 escaped the scrapman and was moved to the Thorpe Camp Visitor Centre at Woodhall Spa.
It is currently painted in 111 Sqn colours, one of many over the top paint schemes that were prevalent in the Lightning fleet during the early to mid 1960's.
The "All Aloominum Pursoot toob" an Americanism was just one of several nicknames given to this beautiful classic all British jet.
