Geocache Description:

Located within the Kaimai Mamaku Forest Park, along the Tuahu Track. Park at the end of Hot Springs Road (just south of Katikati off SH2).

We have made this cache accessible to those who, for whatever reason, choose not to climb the hairy mountains in search of those difficult Kaimai caches. You can still enjoy the forest environment AND pick up this cache as a bonus

Take a 20 minute walk (one way) to see the Tuahu kauri tree (Agathis australis) a 600 year old remnant of what were once extensive kauri forests in this area.

With purposeful stride and devilish plan,
into the Kaimais went the Tparty man.
Prodding and poking with no one around,
seeking a place for a cache to be found.
Finally placing where no one can see,
hiding the treasure by the big kauri tree.

Out of the carpark and put through their paces,
come Tauranga cachers with smiles on their faces.
Flossy and Splatty and Lion Fish too,
The next one to find it - will it be you?


Follow the Tuahu Track, a well-formed, all-weather track with a gentle grade. The first waypoint takes you to the steeper (but shorter) climb up steps. If this is not for you, carry on to the next waypoint for an easier grade. Either way, you are on a short loop track.

A disease is killing our kauri. You can help prevent this, by cleaning your footwear before and after leaving kauri forested areas; keeping to the defined tracks; and staying away from their sensitive tree root systems. Visit the Kauri Dieback website for detailed information.
For this reason the cache IS NOT located next to the tree, but placed a short distance from it along the boardwalk.

An easy track for a caper


For the slightly more adventurous... once you have found this cache, you may enjoy a 40 minute return walk to a stand of about 20 young kauri trees. The Kauri Grove Track starts 100 meters before the Tuahu Track (back down the road from the carpark) and crosses the Te Rereatukahia stream. You are likely to get wet feet here, and at times a river crossing should not be attempted.

For the slightly more insane... while you are in the area, you may wish to find:
The Sentinel a traditional by GuanoGerbil (climb to the top of a rock)
Lunch4Six a traditional by Syrius Black (lots of ups and downs to walk)
Baldy's Knob a traditional by Syrius Black (even more ups and downs to enjoy! If you choose your day right...you could even get blown off the ridge )

When you are finished with your walks, you might be tempted to pop in to the Sapphire Springs just down the road.
