GULLS AT KENTUCKY DAM

The gull seen here between November and april - as many as 50,000 depending on the weather north - constitute one of the largest inland concentrations of wintering gulls in the eastern United States.  The gulls come south to Kentucky Lake from their nesting grounds in northern Canada in search of open water and food after Canadian lakes and coastline waters freeze.  The gulls find the swirling waters below Kentucky Dam particularly productive fishing grounds for drum, shad, and other rough fish.

Eleven different kinds of gulls, including some vary rare species have been seen here. Ring-billed gulls are the most common, followed by the larger Herring Gull.
