In this wonderful beach, you will find a row of stones that divides the beach into two. In this stone there are quartz.

What is Quartz

How quartz is formed depends on two of the most prevalent materials in the earth's crust, silicon and oxygen. Quartz is an abundant element appearing in many forms within the earth's crust; known as silicon dioxide or Si02. Quartz is one of the hardest of minerals registering at around a 7 on the Mohs hardness scale. Chemically, quartz is the most basic form of all the silicates. Quartz is cool to the touch as a result of its high thermo-conductivity nature. The coolness of quartz is the origin of beliefs among early peoples that quartz was permanently frozen ice. Primitive peoples used quartz for weapons and tools before using it for ornamental purposes. For over four thousand years, quartz has been used for jewelry; a use that remains in great demand today.




How Quartz Forms

Quartz is a natural formation that occurs when silica rich solutions occur in underground cracks and crevices in the earth allowing unlimited expansion. Smooth surfaces on the quartz are a representation of the equilibrium of the crystal pattern. When the crystals display hexagonal shapes, it means that the growth of the quartz was unhindered.




The Forms of Quartz

The varieties of quartz created are dependent on the dissolved elements present during the formation. If water and silica-rich rocks such as sandstone interact, silica-rich minerals will form like amethyst and agate; or even opal. Of the types of quartz, opal is non-crystalline and originates from bits of gel meshed together measuring less than a micron. The fluid nature of opal displays a conchoidal fracture that allows for the intricate play of colors due to the water amounts. Opal is unstable because over time it transforms into other mineral silicates. The color bands in agate occur as a consequence of chemical impurities. Iron creates a red or orange tone, while manganese and calcium present themselves as black or blue.Other forms of quartz include flint and chert. Jasper is a variety of quartz that is impure due to coloration from iron oxide inclusions. Quartz is prevalent in geodes, usually presenting itself in limestone.

Milky quartz may be the most common variety of crystalline quartz and can be found almost anywhere. The white color may be caused by minute fluid inclusions of gas, liquid, or both, trapped during the crystal formation. The cloudiness caused by the inclusions effectively bars its use in most optical and quality gemstone applications. Milky quartz is widely used as a decorative landscaping material by gardeners.




The crystal structure of Quartz

Quartz belongs to the trigonal crystal system. The theoretically ideal Quartz crystal shape is a six-sided prism terminating with six-sided pyramids at each end. In nature quartz crystals are often twinned, distorted, or as intergrown with adjacent crystals of quartz or other minerals as to only show part of this shape, or to lack obvious crystal faces altogether and appear massive. Well-formed crystals typically form in a 'bed' that has unconstrained growth into a void; usually the crystals are attached at the other end to a matrix and only one termination pyramid is present. However doubly-terminated crystals do occur where they develop freely without attachment, for instance within gypsum. A quartz geode is such a situation where the void is approximately spherical in shape, lined with a bed of crystals pointing inward.

α-quartz crystallizes belongs to the trigonal crystal system and β-quartz belongs to the hexagonal system. Both α-quartz and β-quartz are examples of chiral crystal structures composed of achiral building blocks (SiO4). The transformation between α- and β-quartz only involves a comparatively minor rotation of the tetrahedra with respect to one another, without change in the way they are linked.
