Near to this spot, 95 year old Sandy George lives a spritely life. Sandy was part of a crew of 22 flying Flying Fortress and after training in Scotland undertook umpteen bombing raids over Germany during WWII. Still driving, and with a mind like a trap and an elephantine memory, you might spot Sandy in his Citroen tootling along Lower Glenn Rd. Sandy is one of the characters of Kaupkonui and he'll give you a wave if he sees you. I loved visiting him when I was young and listening to his intrepid stories, a trait that my nearby nephew has also adopted. In winter, it would also come with a sherry, which mean a good yarn, but it was worth every minute.
Some of Sandy and Francie's children also fly. Two served with the RNZAF when we had a Skyhawk fleet. It was regular for our houses to be buzzed by the sound of Skyhawks flying low and deliberately over Sandy's house. In the 1970s, a full-scale inquiry was undertaken when a visitor landed his plane in the paddocks to the North of KT-2 and KT-3. It was meant to land at the Hawera Aerodrome, and was thus reporting missing. That had nother to do with Sandy, and the pilot was severely censured for landing without permission in the adjacent paddocks. That was just one of countless stories I remember.
Here's to you, Sandy!
FTF and 2nd to find may need a special tool to reach the log. A sharp blade will suffice, so that the next person can prize it off without damaging the camouflage. And in case you are wondering, yes, it is tail-paint!
