South Dakota Fun Fact: The James River has had many names -- there was "E-ta-zi-oo-ka-se" meaning unnavigable river from Dakota tribes, the U.S. Congress name of "Dakota River", and the name that stuck was "Riviere aux Jacques" or James River. Over 700 miles long, it only drops a few inches per mile and is usually very shallow from North Dakota to where it joins the Missouri River east of Yankton.
