About Oregon Electric Railway Donald Station
Welcome to little Donald Oregon. The Oregon Electric Railway was built thru here around 1907. An Electrical Substation that doubled as a Railroad Station was built here. The station was called Donald, being named after the Official of the construction company that built the Railway. The need for an electrical Substation was due to that OE was an electrified Interurban line running from Portland to Eugene via Salem. Passenger service ended in the early 1930's, freight service continues to this day as part of the Portland and Western Railroad. The electric trains went away a long time ago. There is considereation to extend WES Commuter rail from Wilsonville to Salem or Keizer, which may return Donald to a passenger stop in the future, but I would not hold my breath. There were plans to turn this old building into a museum for the Donald Historical Society, but so far nothing has happened. Be sure to visit my other OERwy caches in Tonquin, Waconda and Pirtle. And ponder what we once had before the advent of Hwy 99 and I-5.
