Geocache Description:

Views of the harbour.

BYOP....

This one shouldn't be to difficult.

This history of Port Elizabeth’s harbour is very much intertwined with the history of the city itself. It wasn’t long after European ships first skirted their way along the African coastline that ships regularly started to make berth in the normally tranquil bay that the city of Port Elizabeth was founded on. The stop made fresh water and land available to crew and the two were most often welcome after long months spent at sea. Old sailing yachtIt all started on 12 March 1488 when the Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias first landed at Kwaaihoek. It was here that he erected one of his famous crosses, creating a landmark that could possibly be used on later voyages and marking his historical landing. This journey was later repeated by Vasco da Gama, another Portuguese explorer. Da Gama was the first European to discover a sea route to India, around Africa and it was on this historic journey that he made his stop in Algoa bay in 1497. His discovery revolutionized trade with India as it enabled Europeans to bypass expensive middle-men traders in Asia and deal more directly with business-men in this country. Despite the important role that Algoa Bay played in the lives of seafaring men en route to India in successive years, it remained only a ‘landing place with fresh water’ on navigation charts for several hundred years afterwards. This, despite the fact that both Dias and Da Gama gave names to the various natural landmarks found in the area.
