Geocache Description:

One of Canberra's grand old homesteads from the 19th Century

The land was originally granted to John Palmer, his son George taking over in the 1830s and establishing Palmerville. George's sister married William Davis who selected the Gungahlin portion of the estate and built a home, named Gungarline, from 1862 to 1865. Some of the driveway trees were planted around this time.

The property was sold to Edward Crace in 1877 who built a new wing, in the Victorian style, in 1883 (see photo). Edward died in 1892, his wife Kate continuing to live there until 1915 when it was resumed by the Commonwealth. A son, Everard, obtained a lease and stayed at the property until his death in 1928.

The property was leased several times after this, even acting as student accommodation for the ANU in 1949. The property was taken over by the CSIRO Wildlife Survey Section in 1953. The CSIRO still occupies the site although the majority of the staff moved out in 2011.

Unfortunately the site is not open to the public and the homestead cannot be seen from outside the boundaries. More information and recent photos can be found on the internet.

The cache is placed at the Barton Highway entrance to the property at the start of the original driveway. Access is via the Gungahlin drive exit lane. Please be very careful entering and leaving the driveway as there can be heavy traffic on the highway. Easier accessed by bike!
