The Lady in White Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Mushnikas: Every time I come here, the maintenance man tells me that he's closing the gates soon and I wouldn't want to get stuck in a place like this overnight - yikes! I also realize that maintenance men don't like you nosing around their "maintenance area", so I'll let this go, so that no one else has any of these problems. Spending the night in an infamous place like this would not be fun! Besides, I have a much better cache a few hundred feet away which I will fix it up a bit and leave it as is.

Geocache Description:

Many ghost stories have been told about Mount Misery and they say that Sweet Hollow Road is haunted by the “lady in white”. Local folklore says that although she died years ago, her ghost waits by the side of the road and then when you go to pass her she jumps at your car. The lady in white is also supposed to be Mary from "Mary’s Grave", and people say that you can find her grave stone in the graveyard that is on Sweet Hollow Road.

The Lady in White: It is said that sometime between 1840 and 1851 a hospital was located on Mount Misery. It mysteriously burned down, and many patients and staff were trapped inside. It was rebuilt fifteen years later. Only five months after the rebuilding, it supposedly was torched by an insane woman and burned to the ground again. The Lady in White, also known as Mary, was said to have been a patient at the hospital. It is rumored that moans, screams and cries of misery for help can causing local folks to call it “Mount Misery”. Other stories claim that the “Lady” or Mary was pushed out of a car on Sweet Hollow Road by a jealous boyfriend. While her injured body lay in the street, she was hit and killed by another car. An even earlier story goes back to the late 1600’s, and talks about Mary being a witch who was hung and buried in the area.

In many of these cases, there have been reports of a “veiled lady in white” wandering about the road and in the woods, especially near the area of Mount Misery Road where the hospital was. The lady is said to appear and walk right out into passing cars, terrifying their drivers until she quickly disappears. Some say, if she was the woman who was hit by the car, that she roams the street carrying an ax, looking for her killer.

Another urban legend is that awhile ago 3 boys committed suicide by hanging themselves off of the Northern State overpass bridge on Sweet Hollow Road. It is said that when driving down Sweet Hollow Road, if you look up at the bridge you will see 3 bodies hanging there.

The most terrifying ghost I heard about was that of a slain police officer. As the story goes, there is a police officer who pulls over cars on Sweet Hollow Road. The officer seems normal until he turns around and has blood on his uniform, and the back of his head is missing from a shotgun blast.

Instructions: North of Old Country rd & South of Northern State, pull in (if gates are open, 8:30 – 4:30 Weather Permiting)  go straight east to end and right to the southeastern corner.  Please be respectful and grab the cashe & leave, don’t try checking for any names on stones, cause it’s all just urban legends!

Cache is a vile with log & pencil only.
