Geocache Description:

Easy roadside cache just of the R30.


This road leads to a diamond mine which is situated 40 km
south of Welkom, in the Theunissen district
Free State province. Not many diamond mines in this province....
Brief history: Diamonds were originally discovered in
the area in 1911. The area was first exploited, by an
unknown mining company, in 1926. The first mine
shaft was developed in the 1950s by a well known gold mining company during their ownership of the property, over one-million carats
were produced. Between 1976 and 1999, four
companies owned the rights to this diamond mine.
