Downtown Hicksville Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Mushnikas: This cache had to be archived because it constantly fell apart and
had nothing but problems since its creation. It was re-built many times but still kept coming apart. A sturdier, new cache has been created a bit northeast of this caches original location and will replace this one.

Geocache Description:

Welcome to beautiful downtown Hicksville!

In 1648, Robert Williams bought nine square miles of land from Pugnipan, chief of the Matinecock tribe. He paid Pugnipan in Trading Cloth. This land, is represented today by Hicksville and adjacent parts of Jericho, Plainview, Syosset and Woodbury.

Valentine Hicks, son-in-law of nationally famous abolitionist and Quaker preacher Elias Hicks, and eventual president of the Long Island Railroad bought land in the village in 1834 and turned it into a station stop on the LIRR in 1837. The station became a depot for produce, particularly cucumbers for a famous catsup makers Company plant. After a blight destroyed the cucumber crops, the farmers grew potatoes. It turned into a bustling New York City suburb in the building boom following World War II. Sportsmen came to Hicksville by train and stayed at the Grand Central Hotel (which was one block east of cache) , hired a horse and buggy and traveled to Islip or Babylon for some fishing. In front of the Grand Central Hotel, they bought tickets on the stagecoach for all parts of Long Island to hunt or fish. Hicksville now has the largest train station & post office on Long Island.

Cache is North of the Hicksville Railroad Station, South of the Broadway Mall and East of the Post Office. Park on any street, not in my lot and walk to this easy find. The cache was handmade at the body shop 200 feet way.   Please re-assemble it the way you found it so the next person has a similar challenge. It is a small tube, only room for a small log, so BYOP.
