It’s that time of year again to get outdoors and explore a small part of the world around us by enjoying another GEOTREK adventure! Those that participated last year had a fantastic time and encouraged us to run this event again.
The published coordinates are NOT the location for this event, but it is the starting point. This event involves a drive through some beautiful countryside and ends up at a picnic spot where participants can come together and enjoy the camaraderie of GEOCACHING.
Events are a great way to meet people and make new friends with a common interest, pick up the latest information on equipment, techniques and software, share stories about the latest caching adventure and swap travel bugs. You may even pick up a hint or two on those pesky DNFs. A group photo of those in attendance at the picnic will be taken at approximately 2pm.
Here’s how GEOTREK works:
1. Although a team can consist of one player, GEOTREK would work better if you have at least a driver and a navigator working together.
2. Arrive at the published coordinates at Annangrove Park, between 8:30am and 10am. You will be given a game sheet with the coordinates for a number of waypoints to visit followed by the coordinates of the picnic spot.
3. Navigate to each waypoint in turn. At each waypoint, on your game sheet, an instruction will be given that will tell you what it is you need to find. Three answers are supplied and all you do is circle the correct one. (Yep, it’s that easy!)
4. The GEOTREK course alone should take you about 2½ to 3 hours to complete. If you hunt for caches along the way, this will add to your time. If you do intend to do some cache hunting, it may be better to start GEOTREK earlier rather than later. There is a small section of unsealed road just under 2km long but it is in excellent condition and can be driven on by any vehicle.
5. When you arrive at the picnic destination, hand in your game sheet for a chance to win a prize. To be eligible for a prize, you must have an entry with 100% correct answers so look carefully. Prizes will be drawn randomly from the eligible entries.
6. At the final destination, enjoy a “BYO Everything” picnic and share your geocaching stories with others you meet. There are some shops a 5 minute drive away where you can get some takeaway food if you prefer.
7. You have until 2:15pm to complete the course and arrive at the picnic spot. This is when entries close. The prize draw will take place at 2:30pm.
8. Safe participation in GEOTREK is your responsibility. Please observe all road rules and be conscious of your surroundings, especially other vehicles.
Closer to the event, for those participants that want to hunt for geocaches along the way, I will post a set of coordinates that can act as an origin for a Pocket Query that will cover the GEOTREK course.
If you can’t make the start during the stated times and/or don’t wish to participate in the GEOTREK course, you are still more than welcome to come along to the picnic. At 10am a sign with the location and coordinates of the picnic spot will be posted at the starting point at Annangrove Park. From here, it should take you approximately 30 minutes to drive to the picnic spot.
In the case of bad weather on the day, a decision will be made and a note will be placed on this page at 7:30am on the morning of the event indicating if it will go ahead or not. Fingers are crossed for a beautiful day.
Please post a “Will Attend” log and indicate if you will be participating in the GEOTREK course or just coming to the picnic. Also, add this event to your watchlist so you receive any announcements.
We hope you can come along and help make the second GEOTREK a very enjoyable occasion.
Cheers,
Calypso62 and Geotooter
