George Herbert Leigh Mallory (18 June 1886 – 8 or 9 June 1924) was an English mountaineer who took part in the first three British expeditions to try and scale Mount Everest in the early 1920s
During the 1924 British Mount Everest expedition Mallory and his climbing partner Andrew 'Sandy' Irvine both disappeared on the North-East ridge during their attempt to make the first ascent of the world's highest mountain. The pair were last seen when they were about 800 vertical feet (245m) from the summit, to this day it is unclear if they made the summit.
Exactly 100 years ago this month Mallory climbed to the top of Bredon Hill with author and good friend Arthur Benson. It is alleged that they left some coins hidden in a Limestone boulder at the summit. This was obviously used as part of his training regime in preparation for the ascents that would follow.
I have decided that a fitting centennial memory is for us to meet up and pay homage to Mallory. Who knows, in a few years time it may be CacheWalker does Everest.
The event will be at a nice little picnic area at the base of Bredon Hill just round the corner from Elmley Castle church. The event will take place from 1pm till 2pm on the 27th April. Please feel free to bring your own lunch and join us for some Geocaching chit chat or just pop in, say hi, and then go exploring Bredon Hill and see if you can find Mallory's hidden coins.
There isn't much parking at the event co-ords, there is plenty of space on the road side in the village at the parking co-ords
Why not pop along to the CacheWalker forum to join in with the chat and keep up to date with all things Geocaching in the North Cotswolds
