Geocache Description:

Micou’s Island:

Micou’s Island has a history of Mi’kmaq (Pre 1700’s) and European (Post 1700’s -1931) settlement.
The land of what is now Micou’s Island was owned by members of the Dauphinee family from 1785 until 1921. In 1921 the island was sold to Walter Boutlier for $500 (a value of around $6,000 today). Walter then sold the island to Andrina Micou (An American) in 1931 for just $1.00.
The island was owned by the Micou Family from 1931 – 2005. In 2005 the Island was put up for sale. In 2007 the St. Margaret’s Bay Stewardship Association formed a “stewardship agreement” with Nova Scotia’s Department of Natural Resources and bought the island.
Micou’s Island is now designated as “Crown land”. Anyone can visit Micou’s Island at any time of the year.
Micou’s Island is the most visited beach on the East side of St. Margaret’s Bay, the beaches receive up to 2,000 visitors over the course of a year.

The Sandbar:

The sand bar that connects Micou’s Island to the mainland is walkable (without having to wade through water... though you may get you feet a little wet from puddles) for close to a five hour window that is two and a half hours on either side of low tide... but don’t lose track of the time or you’ll get wet or stuck!

The following link is a tide table for St. Margaret’s Bay. (visit link)

The Memorial Site:

This cache is located at the memorial site for Creswell MacMurray Micou and his wife Andrina McIntyre Micou. The site is marked by two plaques that have been secured to a rock. The ashes of both Micous were spread here during memorial services.

The Cache:

THIS IS ON A TIDAL ISLAND. GO AT LOW TIDE SO YOU DON'T GET WET OR USE A BOAT.
This is a winter friendly micro cache. Bring your own writing stick.

Enjoy the island!
