Engang udbrød der krig mellem fugle og pattedyr. Da flagermusene skulle vælge side, valgte de pattedyrene fordi det var de største. Krigen endte med sejr til fuglene, og derfor tør flagermusene kun komme frem om natten, for da sover de fleste fugle.
Fiktion:
I persisk og i kinesisk kultur symboliserer flagermus lykke og høj alder, mens de i europæisk kultur står for djævelen og mystikken.
Drikker man flagermusblod bliver man usynlig.
Gnider man flagermusblod i sine øjne, bliver man synsk og får "nattesyn" (man kan se hvad der er usynligt, og man ser lige godt om natten som om dagen).
Bærer man en tørret flagermus på sig, vinder man i kortspil.

Af jordens 4.500 pattedyrarter, er de 1.100 arter flagermus, og kun 3 af dem drikker blod.
Den største flagermus (flyvende hund) har et vingefang på mere end 1,5 meter og vejer over 1 kg, mens den mindste vejer 2 gram.
En af de almindeligste danske arter, dværgflagermus (pipistrel), skal fange 2.000 - 3.000 insekter i døgnet for at klare sig.
