Geocache Description:

Treerific #3, Russian Olive

Don't be 'rushin' too fast or you might blow right by it! Terrain difficulty is for the proximity to the highway. Be sure to use caution when pulling off and on the road, and park with all four wheels completely off the pavement. Nice little turn out close to GZ.

Russian olives have a reputation as a nasty, thorny, dirty, ugly, tree and is considered to be an invasive species in most of the U.S. We have a joke for it in the tree care industry, Q: "How do you tell which tree is a Russian Olive?" A: "It's the one that's going through the wood chipper!" But there is actually a lot of great uses for the species that is not widely known to the general public. Their fruits are edible, though not entirely appetizing, and could work in a pinch if one were stranded in the desert. They are incredibly hardy, and can grow in soils with next to nothing for nutrients, and do not need much water to survive. They also have the ability to fix nitrogen in their roots, making them an excellent support species for organic and sustainable agriculture. And, in my opinion, they have a very interesting growth habit that makes them look wicked and evil, reminding me of witches and haunted houses.
