Grand Journey to Canal Beach Traditional Cache

This cache is temporarily unavailable.

Skookum Bear: I see that your cache has been in need of attention for a period of time beyond the four weeks mentioned in the Geocaching Guidelines. While I feel that Geocaching.com should hold the location for you and block other caches from entering the area around this cache for a reasonable amount of time, we can't do so forever. Please either repair/replace this cache, or archive it so that someone else can place a cache in the area, and geocachers can once again enjoy visiting this location. Also, if you haven’t done so already, please pick up any remaining cache bits as soon as possible.

Cache Owner Action Required

  • If you reactivate the cache and/or post a note here within a month, then no action will be taken. Whatever your intentions, please post a note here on the cache page to let us know that you are still active and maintaining the cache.

  • If you do not wish to take care of outstanding issues with your cache, then please archive it using the Archive link in the upper right of the page. Retrieve any container(s) that may still be in place.

  • If you repair or replace the cache within 30 days, please post both an Owner Maintenance log and an Enable log.

  • If the area is inaccessible due to winter conditions, please post a note on the cache page indicating when you will be out to check up on it.

  • If the area is closed due to forest fires, or their aftermath, please post a note on the cache page indicating that. Caches disabled longer than a year should be archived.

  • If the area is closed due to flooding, please post a note on the cache page indicating that. Caches disabled longer than a year should be archived.

If 30 days pass with no response, then I'll assume that this listing is effectively abandoned and your cache will be archived without further notice.

Please do not respond to this note by sending an email reply - your response will go to an unmonitored location and I won't see your response! Post any notes or comments directly to your cache page using the Write Note option for the log type.

CANAL BEACH. A beach on the canal at the south end of the City of Port Alberni.

This area is being re-claimed from the heavy industry that used to fill this area - a plywood mill that used to make a first class product. Times changed and plywood was no longer the choice for interrior walls of homes and other buildings. The mill went away, but the debris remained.

The City of Port Alberni decided to clean it up and invited our citizens to come and participate to help make the now public beach a clean and safe place. And they did. We are not finished yet, but you can come and use the space now, as others are.

The first public function here occured on January 1st 2014 - the Polar Bear Swim. The hardy folks showed up in everything you could imagine from boxer shorts to a full suit and everything in between. Children and adults alike participating to truly get the beach 'on the map'. Hundreds of well wishers crowded the area to wish them well and enjoy the festivities of the day.

The most prepared were the most 'neglected' on the beach as Search and Rescue, Volunteer Coast Guard, Port Alberni Fire Dept members and several Ambulances were all standing by for assistance. Their services were not required - and that is a very good thing.

Right now, the area supports newly planted grass from this past fall and a few picnic tables. Some of the banners that graced the City this summer are on display along a fence blocking the industrial area on the other side.

Soon, folks will bring their chairs here and watch wind surfers scoot back and forth across canal, observe the folks out fishing for our world class salmon, see the boom boats in action and maybe see the Frances Barkley coming or going on her route to the other end of the canal. Dogs will join swimmers in the water and other folks will just walk, or read a book in the warm sun. Others will take the opportunity for a picnic here.

CANAL BEACH - a re-claimed beach on the south end of the City of Port Alberni - come visit and enjoy it for yourself!
