This memorial plaque marks the spot where the completion of the bitumising of the Birdseye Highway took place. For years, Sylvia Birdseye provided a passenger and freight service to the people of Eyre Peninsula from Adelaide, traversing dirt roads of all conditions. The Birdseye Highway which traverses from Cowell to Elliston, was named in her honour. Both travellers and locals were overjoyed when the sealing of this road was completed, making the journey between Elliston and Lock a much more pleasant experience than it previously was, with the poorly maintained dirt road.
