The low-lying grazing land was gifted to DOC in 2006 by the late Maurice (Snow) Garde-Brown. the land is adjacent to the existion DOC administered Athenree Refuge Reserve and was gifted on the condition it would be restored to wetland/saltmarsh to provide habitat for the indigenous flora and fauna. Other predicted benefits include flood protection and a habitat for the native fish species such as whitebait.
Two brand new ponds have been dug to create wetland habitat and a walk way around the area has been created.
Many of the wetlands around the margins of the Tauranga Harbour have been modified or lost due to reclamation, drainage, weed encroachment and grazing.
It is worth walking around the full track to see how the planted trees are growing around the area.
Good parking near the entry gate inside the reserve.
