Geocache Description:

We were inspired by some cache placements on Mount Buller to place one of our own – at the time it looked like just a hop, skip and a jump to the West Ridge cairn however the walk is very deceptive. You will be able to take in some terrific views while you catch your breath.

Although the area is accessible at all times of the year the track is classified as medium/hard during the summer time and hard during the snow season. We strongly recommend that the cache is only attempted during the warmer months as the area is potentially dangerous. Should you choose to hike in winter you will need cramp-ons and an ice axe, know how to self arrest utilising the axe as it is a 45° gradient to the tree line. The track is semi-technical with some loose shale sections that can be dangerous at any time of the year. PLEASE TAKE CARE.

Shorter access is via the Buller summit taking the track past the fire tower allowing a couple of hours return. The longer route commences in the Howqua Hills above Sawmill Settlement and follows an exposed route all the way to the summit – this route is approximately 11klm return and will require 2-3hours each way dependent on fitness.
