Geocache Description:

This series is designed to encourage local or visiting cachers to explore and discover the mighty and fascinating fortification remains that are dotted around Alderney’s majestic coastline.

Any exploration should be done with great caution. That said, these cache locations are by no means outrageous: The Vlads have been frequenting these spots for years with very little trouble.

Fortification Series – Fort Gronez

This fort is one of the oldest forts on the island and its prime purpose was to defend the “Harbour of Refuge” at Braye. In many ways a Goliath of Alderney’s forts, it was reasonably large and heavily armed, with 14 guns in 8 batteries in 1886. Inside the fort are stores, workshops, garages and offices and there is evidence of German occupation. Gronez is now owned by the States of Alderney.

This regular-sized cache is situated on the west side of Fort Gronez, after a challenging scramble up from Crabby Bay. Be careful of the tides, and please replace the cache as you found it. You will need a pen.
