Geocache Description:

Bring your pen.

The cache in the inside parameter of the harbour. You can go thru the security at the gate on the lefthand side.

Doringbaai Lighthouse (or Thorn Bay in English) stands on a rocky outcrop in the bay that acts as a natural breakwater fro vessels entering the bay. The bay was used as a safe anchor by ships travelling to and from the Cape.

The original lighthouse was of aluminium and commisioned in 1963, but has been replaced by the present concrete structure in 1993. The lighthouse is still operational.

I grew up in Doringbaai. My dads boats was based at Doringbaai Harbour. We used to be about 26 kids in the Primary school ( Grade 1 to 7) Our playground was at Kameelkop (behind the Lighthouse). Here we caught Crayfish and Hotnots Fish (I believe it is now called Kaapse Galjoen)

In the days that the factory was still up and running they used to only export the Crayfish Tails and dumped the rest of the carcass. We use to break off the nicest part of the Crayfish (legs) for home use..

This is no longer a Crayfish Factory, but is still open to the public.

This was a real privilege grewing up in Doringbaai

Please take a walk to the jetty and enjoy the views
