Use the farthest West entrance. This cache is an orange pill bottle hidden to the left of the Churchill’s. The squirrels love this area! Bring your own writing piece. Please NO caching at night.
In 1883 Maple Grove Cemetery was established as the first public cemetery for African Americans. Although this land looks sparse, it is estimated that there are nearly 2000 graves here, many unmarked, or were marked with field stones that have since been destroyed. Some stones have been lost into the ground and sadly their identification is gone forever. This cemetery also holds over 100 known military servicemen from every war up to the present. I moved to Harrodsburg from Washington State almost two years ago. Since that time, I have been driving around this “settlement” making discoveries. I am surprised there are not more caches in the city. Hwy 127 runs right through town, but most caches in the area are on the bypass that skirts the city completely. These caches are designed to take you into the city; to appreciate this historic community. Mercer County has 71 properties and districts listed on the National Register; 1 of these is a National Historic Landmark.
