Geocache Description:

The cache is a black jar type container. The lid can be tough to get back on, but please be sure it is on securely before rehiding. This cache is NOT located IN the park.

Bring your own writing instrument.

The cache is on the high point behind the park and offers a different perspective.

Old Fort Harrod State Park contains a full-scale replica of the fort, built by James Harrod in 1775, which is the centerpiece of this park. The cabins and blockhouses are furnished with handmade utensils, furniture, crude tools and agricultural implements used by the pioneers. Costumed interpreters demonstrate pioneer crafts, and a live animal corral adds to the “living history” experience. (Living history craftspeople demonstrate mid-April through October.)

The park complex also features the Mansion Museum, a Greek Revival home built in 1830. The museum houses an outstanding collection of Civil War history, Native American artifacts, gun collection and more. Other highlights within the park are a pioneer cemetery, the Lincoln Marriage Temple housing the cabin where Abraham Lincoln’s parents were married and the George Rogers Clark Federal Monument.

Behind the fort is a picnic area, a playground, and an amphitheater. During the month of July you can take in the play "James Harrod: The Battle for Kentucky".

I moved to Harrodsburg from Washington State almost two years ago. Since that time, I have been driving around this “settlement” making discoveries. I am surprised there are not more caches in the city. Hwy 127 runs right through town, but most caches in the area are on the bypass that skirts the city completely.

These caches are designed to take you into the city; to appreciate this historic community. Mercer County has 71 properties and districts listed on the National Register; 1 of these is a National Historic Landmark.
