Built between 1416 and 1422, Zakimi Gusuku (Castle) ruled the northern portion of the Ryukyu Kingdom. Standing on the castle walls provides a spectacular 360 view of the Yomitan Peninsula as far as the Kerama Islands to the South, Zampa Point to the east, and the Motobu Peninsula to the north.
For those who have searched in vain for the Yamada Gusuku ruins, you will find them at Zakimi Gusuku. Gosamaru, the lord of Zakimi Gusuku, demolished Yamada Gusuku for the limestone to build Zakimi Castle. During World War 2, the Japanese mounted guns on the walls, which helps explain the further destruction of the gusuku sites during the Battle of Okinawa. After restoration, Zakimi Gusuku became a World Heritage Cultural Site.
