Giant Little Apples Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

supergeofish: Came up here a few weeks ago and indeed the ridge this trail is on was cleared as a fire break. Good thing the fire never made it this far... Cache is gone, and I'll leave the area to someone else.

Geocache Description:

Another Christmas gift for you to enjoy! If you're heading to the canyon views (which you should!) take a quick side-trip from "To Encourage You #3" to this grove of huge manzanitas.

Growing up in California, frequently hiking, camping, and backpacking in the Sierra and its foothills, I encountered manzanita bushes often. Even knew they made for great coals being such a dense wood. Never wondered about what their name meant.

Until I took a Spanish class while earning my credential... Manzana (pronounced mahn-SAW-nuh) is apple in English. Ok. No connection yet, right? Me neither. Then we were told that in Spanish the last syllable is changed to ita (or ito, the whole male/female thing for word is too much for now!) if you want to diminish a noun. So little apple, becomes... yeah, manzanita (mahn-sawn-EEta). If you don't get it yet, the bush has tons of sticky, red berries which look like little apples all over during spring and summer.

While the kids and I were walking toward the river we took a side trail and found another cool grove of big manzanitas, just perfect for a cache.

Congrats to Peek for FTF!
