GOULBURN RIVER HIGH COUNTRY RAIL TRAIL

TRACK DOWN THE TRAIL OF RAIL HISTORY
Currently running along a former railway easement is a recreational pathway that can be used for walkers, horse riders, cycling and other activities. The trail is now completed, and it is now 134 km in length and runs from Tallarook to Mansfield with a link between Cathkin and Alexandra. The Federal Government has contributed $13 million and $1 million has been received from the State Government to complete the construction of the trail by December 2011. The Goulburn River High Country Rail Trail (GRHCRT) is the longest continuous rail trail in Australia traversing 134 kilometres through north, north east Victoria. Set on a former railway easement, this trail can be cycled, walked or ridden in either direction. If a shorter trip is more your style, there are loads of sections accessible from carparks and villages dotted along the rail trail, all with their own personality from which to choose. The trail will follow Goulburn River at Tallarook and pass through the Trawool Valley. It will continue on through to the historic Yea Railway Station (built 1889), Cathkin, over the former train bridge across Lake Eildon at Bonnie Doon, Maindample, to Mansfield. The trail can commence or end at the Information Centre in Mansfield and near the Mansfield Historical Society located at the former railway station.
