Welcome to San Francisco's most famous landmark, the Golden Gate Bridge. This Wherigo cartridge takes you on an informational and historic tour of the area. Plan to spend approximately 2 hours in the area on and around the bridge to complete the stages of the cartridge before heading to the final container. You will be required to answer 25 questions related to the Golden Gate Bridge. Total walking/biking distance is approximately 3 miles, starting at the Golden Gate Bridge Pavilion and going along the east sidewalk across the strait to the north tower.
All answers to the questions except one are available on information signs within the zones or using field observations. For the one answer that requires some trivia knowledge, the answer has been encrypted in the hint to help those visitors who do not know the answer and may not have internet access to look it up while in the field.
The terrain rating has been listed as a 2.5 due to the distance involved, but all stages, including the final container, are along paved walkways and are fully handicapped-accessible. The main route along the east sidewalk of the bridge may be walked or biked, though accessibility for both options does vary since bicycles are only permitted on the west sidewalk at certain times and the bridge is closed to pedestrians after dark. To my knowledge, all wherigo zones are actually available 24 hrs. However, after dark, only bicycle access is permitted, and you must be buzzed in and out by bridge security. Please consult the schedule here for full accessibility information for the east sidewalk.
The cartridge was personally field-tested by the CO using both the iPhone Wherigo app and a Garmin Oregon 450. During beta testing, all zones triggered and questions functioned as expected. An autosave function has not been included due to known compatibility issues with the Garmin Oregon. The iPhone app automatically saves your progress, so it is not an issue with this device. If you are using a Garmin Oregon to run the cartridge, it is recommended that you exit, save, and resume the cartridge after completing each zone.
