Geocache Description:

This geocache is being placed in honor of Tom Hannahoe, buried in St. Peter's Church Cemetery in East Reading.

This cache is placed near the area where Tom Hannahoe is buried and where every St. Patrick's Day at midnight the descendants of his friend Alvah Schaeffer play "Lass o Galway" and "Nearer my Heart to Thee."  It all began when Tom arrived from Ireland with his new bride in 1855 and never returned. He opened up a saloon and hotel called Stars and Stripes Hotel. Sooo after the German, Alvah Schaeffer moved nearby and the became close friends due to their mutual love of music. One winter in the 1890s they made a promise that whoever died first the other would play their favorite songs at midnight on March 17th every year.. Tom died first and the tradition carries on to this day.
