Geocache Description:

Cache is located on the Livingston trail (more recently named the Trinity Trace Trail) in Lake Livingston State Park. The cache is a log only so BYOP.

Yaupon is probably the most versatile evergreen holly for general use in Texas. It grows on almost any soil type and in sun or shade, and is drought tolerant. Its bright red fruit are a favorite of many birds (but is considered poisonous to humans). It has an interesting scientific name: Ilex vomitoria. Its leaves contain caffeine and can be used to make a tea beverage. Native Americans used it in rituals and it was thought the Yaupon drink may have induced vomiting.

Cache permit on file with Lake Livingston State Park headquarters.
