Morcego-dos-Açores (Nyctalus azoreum)
Descrição É o único mamífero endémico do arquipélago. Trata-se da mais pequena espécie do género Nyctalus da Europa, com um comprimento corporal máximo de 54 mm, tendo apenas 35 mm de cauda. A sua pelagem é, geralmente, muito escura, clareando na região ventral. Esta espécie é uma das poucas no mundo que possui forte atividade diurna, o que se deve, provavelmente, à ausência de predadores. A sua distribuição está restrita aos grupos central e oriental do arquipélago sendo que na ilha de Santa Maria a sua ocorrência é bastante rara. Esta espécie está, atualmente, considerada em Perigo pela Lista Vermelha de Espécies Ameaçadas do IUCN e as suas populações estão a decrescer rapidamente. O isolamento geográfico a que a espécie está sujeita constitui um dos principais fatores de ameaça, tornando-a mais sensível quer a desastres naturais quer a outras ameaças como a perturbação de colónias e a alteração ou destruição de abrigos.

Description It is the only endemic mammal of the archipelago . This is the smallest species of the genus Nyctalus Europe , with a maximum body length of 54 mm , having only 35 mm tail. Its coat is usually very dark , clearing the ventral region. This species is one of the few in the world that has a strong diurnal activity , which is probably due to the absence of predators . Its distribution is restricted to the central and eastern groups of the archipelago of which the island of Santa Maria its occurrence is quite rare . This species is currently considered Endangered by the Red List of Threatened Species IUCN and their populations are declining rapidly . Geographic isolation to which the species is subject constitutes a major threat factors , making it more sensitive to either natural disasters or other threats such as disturbance of colonies and the alteration or destruction of shelters .
