Kumukahi Oasis Traditional Cache

Shoreline oasis in the midst of rugged lava coast.

This cache is located on the island's easternmost point.  The air here is touted as the purest on the planet. The olivine-speckled coast is battered by powerful, intimidating waves and the terrain is unforgiving a'a lava from the 1960 Kapoho eruption.  This area is close to my home and is one of my most favorite spots on the island.  It offers gorgeous views of the ocean, green mountain, and vast lava flow.  Take some time to hike the coastline and appreciate the spectacular and unique beauty of Cape Kumukahi.

From the parking area at the lighthouse you will head straight towards the coast.  There is a smoother and easier to navigate section of lava to the right, as you face the ocean.  As you approach the coast you will find a rough road...head north along this road a short ways until you spot an "oasis" along the shoreline.  This oasis-like area is adorned with heliotrope trees, coconut palms & trailing portulaca, and it is a great spot for an ocean-gazing picnic.

This cache is a small tupperware container hidden at safe distance from the waves.
