This small, weathered building has a long history.
Today it serves as a simple storage building, but its story began several kilometres from here, in the town of Silves, where it was originally built as the local Fish Market.
It stood on the right bank of the Arade River, allowing fish delivered by boat to be unloaded directly at the market.
During the Estado Novo period, construction of the current Municipal Market of Silves began in 1951, and it opened in June 1957. At the same time, improvements were made to the quay in Silves, leading to the dismantling of this building.
Some time later, all of its components were transported to this fishing village, where the building was reassembled and once again served as the local market until April 1991, when the present market was inaugurated just a few metres away.
Today, this historic structure remains a reminder of both Silves' commercial past and the fishing heritage of this village.
