Odkryte w kamieniołowie ślady kręgowców są tropami najstarszych na świecie zwierząt czworonożnych: Tetrapoda. Odkrycie to w zasadniczy sposób zmieniło poglądy na temat jednej z najważniejszych w dziejach życia transformacji ewolucyjnej. Zwierzęta czworonogie wyszły na ląd przynajmniej 18 milionów lat wczśniej, niż dotąd przypuszczano. Żyły nie w rzekach i jeziorach, jak sądzono, lecz na wybrzeżach ciepłych i płytkich mórz. Na dużym bloku skalnym - przed miejscem wskazanym koordynatami - widnieją wciąż ślady Tetrapoda.
Leżąca nieopodal koordynatów inna skała opowiada nie mniej intrygującą historię. Odsłaniane dno morskie więziło w niewielkich lokalnych zagłębieniach różne zwierzęta morskie, które nie zdążyły uciec przed odpływem. W dzisiejszych czasach różnego rodzaju skorupiaki i mięczaki są wyjadane przez ptactwo. W dewonie sytuacja wyglądała inaczej...

- Proszę podać obwód skały, na której widnieją ślady pozostawione na dnie przez skorupiaki.
- Zadanie opcjonalne: fotografia dłoni obok odcisku łapy nastarszego rybopłaza, to coś więcej, niż tylko pamiątka ;)
The vertebrate footprints discovered in the quarry are tracks of the oldest four-limbed animal in the world: the tetrapod. This discovery had a huge influence on theories concerning one of the most important evolutionary transformations in the history of life forms. Apparently, the Tetrapoda had left the water environment and started living on the land at least 18 million years earlier than scientists used to believe. It also turned out that the Tetrapoda didn’t live in rivers and lakes, but on the coasts of warm and shallow seas. On the surface of the huge piece of rock indicated by coordinates you can see the footprints of the tetrapod.
There is also another piece of rock nearby which tells an equally intriguing story. As it was getting gradually exposed, the sea bottom trapped in its hollows various types of sea creatures, which didn’t manage to escape the low tide. Nowadays, crustaceans and molluscs are usually eaten by birds. During the Devonian, the situation was different…

- How many tetrapod footprints are still visible on the rock’s surface?
- Why weren’t the crustaceans eaten by birds?
- How were the tetrapod footprints formed and preserved?
- Measure the circumference of the rock on the surface of which the traces of crustaceans are preserved.
- Optional task: take a picture of your hand placed next to the footprint of the oldest tetrapod – the transitional life form between fish and amphibians. That’s going to be much more than a simple souvenir :)
