De reeks BB4 – WO1 – … neemt jullie mee naar het Brugge tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog.
Aan de hand van foto's krijgen jullie een beeld van de verwoesting. De opgegeven coördinaten plaatsen jullie op de (vermoedelijke) plaats waar de foto werd genomen. Het biedt jullie eveneens de mogelijkheid om de foto's te vergelijken met het heden.

July 28, 1914: Austria declares war on its small neighbor Serbia. WW1 took his place in history.
August 4, 1914: The German army pulls the Belgian border and begins its march.

The series BB4 - WW1 - ... takes you back to the Bruges during the First World War.
On the basis of photographs you get a picture of the devastation. Coordinates places you at the (presumed) location where the photo was taken. It also offers you the opportunity to compare the present with the pictures.

COMMEMORATE

Miljoenen militairen en burgers vonden tijdens WO1 de dood. Honderd jaar na deze feiten zijn we er nog steeds van overtuigd dat de gebeurtenissen van '14-'18 een fundamentele invloed hebben op onze maatschappij en dat de slachtoffers van deze gruwelijke oorlog een waardige nagedachtenis verdienen.
In de Brugse regio zijn verschillende herdenkingsplaatsen te vinden. Betreedt en bezoek ze in alle sereniteit.
Millions of soldiers and civilians were killed during WW1. One hundred years after these events, we are still convinced that the events of '14-'18 have a fundamental impact on our society and that the victims of this horrible war deserve a dignified commemoration.
In the region of Bruges are several memorials to be found. Enter and visit them in all serenity.

KARTUIZERINNENSTRAAT

Vijf platen voor de slachtoffers van WO1, twee voor de slachtoffers van WO2...
Voorbij deze 7 grote platen is de Crypte met de as van kampslachtoffers uit Dachau.
Five plates for the victims of WW1, two for the victims of WW2 ...
Beyond these 7 major plates is the crypt with the ashes of Dachau camp victims.

SINT-MICHIELS

Dit monument werd opgericht ter nagedachtenis van de slachtoffers uit de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog werden de namen van de slachtoffers uit WO2 eraan toegevoegd.
This monument was established in memory of the victims of the First World War. After the Second World War, the names of the victims of WW2 were added.

SINT-ANDRIES

Aan de achterzijde werden de namen gebeiteld van 43 dode militairen, afkomstig uit Sint-Andries.  Op de voorgrond ligt een dode soldaat, rechts staan een treurende vader en een moeder die de lijkwade vasthoudt; links een jonge vrouw met een kind dat zijn armen uitstrekt.
Op de achterkant: in het midden 'AAN ONZE HELDEN'.
Op de zijkanten de namen van de 'BURGERLIJKE SLACHTOFFERS' '1914-1918'.
At the back the names were chiseled from 43 dead soldiers, coming from St. Andrew's. In the foreground is a dead soldier, right are a grieving father and a mother who holds the shroud, left a young woman with a child who stretches his arms.
On the rear in the middle 'OUR HEROES'.
On the sides the names of the "CIVIL VICTIMS ''1914-1918'.

SINT-KRUIS

Dit monument herdenkt de inwoners van Sint-Kruis die zijn omgekomen of vermist in de Eerste en Tweede Wereldoorlog.
This memorial commemorates the residents of St. Cross who were killed or missing in World War I and World War II.

DUITSE MONOLIET
GERMAN MONOLITH

Door de Duitse overheid werd in 1915 op grondgebied Assebroek een Duits soldatenkerkhof opgericht. Bij wijze van monument werd er een grote monoliet geplaatst. Op de dag van de inhuldiging van het monument werd het verzoek van burgemeester Visart de Bocarmé om genade te verlenen aan een vrouw die zou gefusilleerd worden door de militaire bevelhebber Ludwig von Schröder ingewilligd. De monoliet werd later verwijderd en in 1985 teruggeplaatst.
A German soldiers cemetery was by the German government in 1915 in territory Assebroek established. A large monolith was placed as a monument. PRO PATRIA

Op de begraafplaats Pro Patria van het stedelijke kerkhof liggen de burgerlijke slachtoffers uit de Eerste en Tweede Wereldoorlog begraven. Achteraan op de begraafplaats staat het monument 'Pro Patria'. . Het is een levensgrote figuur op een sokkel en tegen een kruis geplaatst. De figuur stelt een krijgsgevangene uit een concentratiekamp voor. Het hoofd fier rechtop, de gelaatsuitdrukking zuiver en sereen, de kampbroek sjofel over de knokige ledematen.
On the cemetery “Pro Patria” of the urban cemetery the victims of the First and Second World War are buried. At the back of the cemetery stands the monument 'Pro Patria'. It is a life-size figure on a pedestal and placed on a cross. The figure represents a prisoner in a concentration camp. The head straight up, the expression pure and serene, the camp pants shabby on the bony limbs.

Er zijn hier in totaal 611 graven, waarvan 520 Belgen, 1 Brit en enkele onbekenden.
Hier werden de lichamen begraven van de militairen die overleden in de hospitalen aan de opgelopen verwondingen bij het verder zetten van het Bevrijdingsoffensief vanaf Oktober.
There are a total of 611 graves, of which 520 Belgians, one Briton and a few unknowns.
Here the bodies were buried of the deceased soldiers in the hospitals of the injuries sustained by the continuation of the final offensive from October.
